Our mission

alt mvmnt is…

A culmination of years of physical training, movement exploration and instruction, and a learned understanding of anatomy and physiology.

An alternative to the status quo of traditional fitness and athletic training that relies on repetition and pushing yourself to the limit, leading to chronic fatigue and overuse injuries.

A sustainable yet efficient method of cross-training that emphasizes gradual, periodized progressive overload and rest as part of training to prevent burnout and preventable injuries as well as recover from unavoidable ones.

A supportive community of individuals with diverse backgrounds and goals who keep each other motivated, accountable, and included.

Who’s behind alt mvmnt?

Hi, I’m Mackenzie, a personal trainer, pole instructor, and dancer. I have been training 1-on-1 clients for over 5 years and have over 12 years of experience in group dance & fitness instruction.

To truly understand why I created alt mvmnt, you have to understand a little bit about my background. Aside from a short stint playing soccer when I was 4, growing up, my only extra curricular activity was dance and the studio basically became my second home. I then went on to graduate from a performing arts high school and college for, you guessed it, dance. But, it wasn’t until college that I found a second passion, and one not that far from what I already knew: exercise. My entire life I’d been training my body, pushing it to perform very precise and particular movements that gave me a better understanding of how my body functioned and what movement patterns produced great ease of motion. After pursuing my two passions, I now had this drive to share this knowledge and understanding with others while broadening the scope of who I could reach.

When I move, when I dance, when I exercise, it is not just a means to an end. So often we receive the message that exercise is just to get slimmer, or shredded, or any other aesthetic goal you can think of. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind having a particular physique BUT what really drives me is feeling strong, capable, and confident in my own body.

I don’t train because I “have to” I train because that’s helps me achieve those goals — and while I don’t always enjoy every minute, I would definitely say I like to find enjoyment in the process.

alt mvmnt is for athletes like me who don’t just want to blindly suffer through another workout and hope that it makes them stronger, more flexible, etc. But really enjoy and understand why training and movement is so important to creating a strong, flexible, capable, and resilient body that you can continue to move how you love for the long haul.

My specialties are: strength conditioning, hypertrophy training, mobility/flexibility, kinesthetic awareness (mind-body connection).

What I do for fun: improvisational dance, hang upside-down on a pole (or other aerial apparatus), spend way to much time in the gym, read everything from fiction to exercise science articles, spend time with my cat, eat delicious food, laugh at puns, be gay.
